A musical version of Rex Pickett’s novel Sideways, which has previously been adapted as a film and play, is currently in development, according to Deadline.

Writer Pickett is collaborating with composer Anthony Adams on the project via a venture with EFG-Renascence Productions. No timeline has been announced.

Pickett said that the forthcoming musical will be based on the original novel, featuring scenes not in the movie. The 2004 film of the same title starred Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church.

EFG-Renascence founder Solomon J. LeFlore said in a statement, “Sideways is an incredible film that has never really been quarried for its franchise potential. We plan to rectify that. With movie-to-Broadway musical adaptations so popular, this seems a natural first step.”

Tony winner Des McAnuff, nominated again this season for his direction of the new musical Ain’t Too Proud, helmed a non-musical production of Sideways at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2013; that adaptation will be seen Off-Broadway in January 2020.

Sideways follows two friends—a frustrated novelist and a no-name TV actor and director—and their journey across the Santa Ynez Valley wine country.
