DESCRIPTION

About New York Theatre Workshop:

At New York Theatre Workshop, we work relentlessly to empower visionary theatre‐makers and bring their work to adventurous audiences through productions, artist workshops and education and community engagement programs. We’re proud to be a home base for many of the most significant theatre-makers of our time, nurturing groundbreaking writers like Victor I. Cazares and Celine Song alongside powerhouse playwrights like Amy Herzog and Ayad Akhtar. From Rachel Chavkin and Lileana Blain-Cruz to Whitney White and Rubén Polendo, we empower inimitable auteur‐directors and give invaluable support to tremendous talents in the earliest days of their careers. We’ve maintained decades‐long relationships with legendary theatre-makers like Will Power, Ivo van Hove, Dael Orlandersmith, and Caryl Churchill, who have shaped our very understanding of what theatre can be.

Since our founding in 1979, we've produced over 150 fully‐realized productions including Jonathan Larson's Rent; Tony Kushner's Homebody/Kabul; Doug Wright's Quills; Claudia Shear's Dirty Blonde; Rick Elice’s Peter and the Starcatcher; Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová and Enda Walsh’s Once; and David Bowie and Enda Walsh’s Lazarus. Enabling our artists to push boundaries generates work like Nathan Alan Davis’s Nat Turner in Jerusalem, Anaïs Michell’s Hadestown, Mfoniso Udofia’s Ufot Family Cycle, Heidi Schreck’s What the Constitution Means to Me, Jeremy O. Harris’s Slave Play and Kristina Wong's Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord. NYTW productions have received a Pulitzer Prize, 25 Tony Awards, 2 Grammy Awards and numerous Obie, Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Awards.

But that’s not what we’re proudest of. We take the greatest satisfaction from the community we’ve built, and the perspective‐shifting experiences we’ve delivered along the way. During the COVID-19 shutdown, our community persevered and together we supported new theatrical experiences that brought people together, changed the conversation, and made a profound impact. Now that we’re back to in-person programming, we feel fortunate to be able to continue to expand and support that community. If that sounds like something you’re interested in, we’d love to meet you.

About the Artistic Staff:

The Artistic Department structure is highly collaborative: each position contributes different strengths and areas of focus to the artistic work and relationships of the Workshop. The manager level position will report directly to the Associate Artistic Director, Theatre & Productions and support the full department on a day-to-day basis in collaboration with the Artistic Administrative Fellows. We work closely together as an ensemble and the addition of the Literary Manager position is an opportunity to recalibrate and think critically about the things we do and how we do them.

About The Position:

· As the Artistic Department works collaboratively, in addition to specific job duties, the Literary Manager will participate in holistic department-wide conversations about the artistic life of the theatre, build relationships with artists, sustain relationships with the Usual Suspect community, and continue to reimagine our artistic values, programs and practices.

· Co-Manage the reading, scouting, and reviewing project proposals for production and artistic department programs inclusive of Mondays @ 3, summer residencies and the 2050 Fellowship with a voice in curatorial conversations.

· Manage NYTW‘s literary database, tracking script submissions and pitches for developmental and production opportunities, correspondence with artists and agents, and coverage reports.

· Manage NYTW scouting and invitation database to keep up to date on outside work presented locally, nationally, and globally.

· Serve as an ambassador for NYTW amongst the artistic community, building relationships with playwrights, attending readings, meeting with writers groups, etc.

· Reimagine NYTW script reading systems in coordination with the Associate Artistic Director, Theatre & Productions.

· Oversee NYTW script readers group to ensure timely review of submissions.

· Co-lead NYTW’s 2050 Artistic Fellowship program.

· Manage timeline and communications with commissioned artists.

· Facilitate Liz Lerman Critical Response Process as a part of our developmental opportunities.

· Serve as a member of NYTW’ Engagement team, collaborating with our Education and Marketing departments to think holistically about Public Programming and community building around the work on our stage and beyond.

· Support Artistic Department on special projects, which may include producerial and logistical support on developmental work, administering Artistic Office Hours, writing language around NYTW’s productions and initiatives, and conducting dramaturgical research in advance of production.

About You:

· You are committed to an equitable and inclusive community.

· You are passionate about theater and a voracious reader of new plays.

· You are interested in curation, have a strong sense of your aesthetic values, and understand how to balance those values with NYTW’s collective aesthetic values.

· You possess a strong knowledge of the theater and performance landscape of New York City and the broader American Theater.

· You have an interest in dramaturgical research and writing as well as thinking holistically about how to support artists in a creative process.

· You embrace the administrative work required to build and sustain artistic visions and projects.

· You are comfortable managing multiple projects concurrently.

· You are highly organized and detail-oriented.

· You have a collaborative spirit and thrive in a collective structure.

· You know when to ask for help.

Bonus:

· You have experience writing and reviewing script reports.

· You have a knowledge of international theater aesthetics and practices.

· You have demonstrated experience handling the logistics of a complex project or event.

· You have experience with Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process.

This is a full-time non-exempt position with a salary of $58,500. Benefits include employer paid medical, dental and life insurance and paid time off. NYTW has several affinity spaces and a Core Team of staff members across the organization committed to moving specific initiatives forward in our focus on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

Please note that NYTW is in a hybrid work environment with Artistic professionals in the office at least three days a week and attending in-person events. Our approach will continue to be evaluated based on advice from local, state, and federal authorities and will take into account the personal situation of every employee. However, this position will require onsite, in-person activity, so the applicant should intend to reside in the greater NYC area.

We know that there are great candidates that may not have all of the qualifications listed above but possess intuitive knowledge or other fully transferable skills. So don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself if that’s you.

To apply, please submit a resume detailed relevant experience and a cover letter that introduces you as an applicant and speaks to your interest in the position. In your cover letter, we’d also also love for you to speak to what moves you about theatre as an art form and (in a couple of sentences) to a specific piece of theatre that has moved you and why.
