PREPARATION
Please prepare 1-2 contemporary monologues of your choice and 16 bars of your choice. An accompanist will be provided. Also, please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

BREAKDOWN

Equity encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94). Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas are not recommended. Singer’s masks can be found at www.broadwayreliefproject.com/singersmask.

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

Harper Amaty Pitt, Joe’s wife, an agoraphobic with a mild Valium addiction. This role is cast.

Louis Ironson, a word processor working for the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. This role is cast.

Prior Walter, Louis’ boyfriend. Occasionally works as a club designer or caterer, otherwise lives very modestly but with great style off a small trust fund. This role is cast.

Hannah Porter Pitt, Joe's mother, currently residing in Salt Lake City. . This role is cast.

SEEKING:
Jorge, a graduate student studying computer science. In his mid-to-late twenties. Born in Bogotá and raised in the U.S., he is caught between his love for machine learning and caring for his recovering alcoholic father.

Younger Jorge, age 7 - 11, Spanish-speaking. Raised in Colombia until he was 10, Younger Jorge is fascinated, yet terrified by, robots like the Terminator. He is impressionable and affected by his father’s drinking.

Gabriel, between 40 and 60 throughout the show, Gabriel is a recovering alcoholic who moved to the U.S. from Colombia when he was 45. Once a hard worker, but devastated by the financial crisis in 2008, Gabriel tries to be there for his son but can’t get past his skewed notions of masculinity.

Arnold, a machine created by Jorge to take care of Gabriel during his cancer treatments. Devised as a nurse, Arnold learns and loves to take care of Gabriel. Arnold appears as only a voice throughout the play.

Anita, Indian-born, the head of graduate admissions at Jorge’s school. The only female POC on the school board, Anita fought to get where she is. Doubles as Gabriel’s doctor, Younger Jorge’s teacher, and Leena, one of Gabriel’s bosses.

Dr. Irene Pepperberg. Her look is bohemian and sensual. She has a slight hybrid Brooklyn- Queens/Boston accent - more a subtle NYC boroughs’ attitude, actually - despite her MIT and Harvard education. She’s funny and irreverent but low key with dry, wry intelligent humor. Late 20s to late 50s. White.

Alex. A human portraying an African Grey parrot. Any gender, race, ability.

Dr. Howard (Howie) Towers/Dr. Rick Pepperberg. Dr. Howard Towers (30s to 60s) an Ivy League educated scientist with a strong Bronx accent. Dr. Rick Pepperberg (30s to 40s) a preppie Midwestern Ivy League educated Jewish scientist and Irene's husband. May Double in the chorus if needed. White.

Dr. Lourdes Acevedo and Others. A dolphin scientist and Irene's best friend. Puerto Rican. (20s to 50s) She has almost the same style as Irene - bohemian and sensual - although she favors black. Doubles in the chorus as indicated.

Chorus. Think of them as Alex and Irene’s “flock.” Any gender, race, ability. Multiple characters including apes.

DIANA 30s to 40s. Female. Black. Delusional, bipolar, and depressed. The sexiness of her yesterdays has only recently begun to soften. She is determined to make her family perfect but is tortured by a death in the family. Vocal Range: G3-F#5

GABE 18-21. Male. Black. Diana & Dan's son. Dashing, athletic, and bright. He is a playful man and everything a mother could imagine. Vocal Range: B2-C5

DAN 30s to 40s. This role is CAST. Male. Diana's husband. He is handsome and genuine. Though a constant in Diana's tumultuous life, he has grown tired and weary of her antics. Vocal Range: Ab2-B4

NATALIE 16. Female. Black. Diana & Dan's troubled daughter. An accomplished pianist and hardworking student, her struggles are exacerbated by her mother's behavior. She greatly admires Henry. Vocal Range: G3-G5

HENRY 17. Male. Natalie's classmate. The all-around musician, philosopher, and slacker. He has an intoxicating capacity for sympathy and romance. Vocal range: G#2-B4

DR. MADDEN 30-40. Male. This role is CAST. Diana's handsome psychiatrist. Quite assured in his practice and considered somewhat of a rock star. Vocal Range: A2-A4
